I have gathered information and created activities to help students to learn about the Treaty Of Waitangi. This work will be completed within the first week of the school year. I have never done an activity like this with a class before, so it will be interesting to see how it goes.

As a staff, our Principal challenged us to set goals and use these to model the process to our students. I chose to make my goal around being better at using Te Reo in class. Information about my goal, including reflections, were linked to our class blog.

This week the students have been working on a crossword as part of their learning about Weather. Using this site: Tawhirimatea - Weather, they had to translate weather words related into Te Reo.

For the last few weeks, our PE focus has been on Te Reo Kori. We've done loads of activities designed to promote understanding of traditional Maori games. Alongside the activities, such as rakau, Mu Torere and Ki Or Rahi, we've talked about how these games help/ed to develop lots of skills.
I organised Marcus from Sport Manawatu to come along and teach us how to play Ki O Rahi. The kids loved this! Following several coaching sessions, Marcus organised a game between my class and some of the staff at Sport Manawatu:

The Mu Torere Championships was a popular competition, where students were drawn at random to face each other in an elimination style competition. After learning how to play this at Taumata O Te Ra (our local marae) last year, the kids were excited to give it another go.
All the students also had the opportunity to learn new skills in more traditional Te Reo Kori activities, such as rakau and poi.

Yesterday, our school visited Te Tikanga (Tokorangi) Marae. This including being welcomed onto the marae with a powhiri. Students participated in a wide range of activities, such as haka, poi, rakau games, sketching and learning about Matariki. I helped to organise a number of aspects of the trip including some of the activities, transport and equipment. The students really enjoyed the day, and had many positive comments to make about this cultural experience. Following the trip, I also put together a video to document some of the highlights from our trip.
